What is the red liquid that comes out of a butterfly's abdomen after its emergence?

The red material that comes out of the abdomen after the butterfly's emergence is metabolic waste material left over from metamorphosis. It is not responsible for the wing colors, which are caused by scales (see Appearance Question #5) and chemical pigments.
